The park’s rocky cliffs offer challenging terrain for rock climbing and rappelling. The Yadkin River Canoe Trail flows through the park and is ideal for paddling. One of four peaks in the Saura Mountain range, Pilots pure quartzite capstone resists the eroding forces of wind and water to loom 1,400 feet above the valley. Located in Surry and Yadkin counties 20 miles northwest of Winston-Salem, Pilot Mountain State Park centers around the iconic geologic knob that serves as a beacon, inviting outdoor enthusiasts to a vast array of activities. Native Americans and early settlers used it to determine their location, and today travelers see it as a guide to rest and relaxation. Pilot Mountain’s namesake granite knob has been a landmark for centuries. Andy Griffith referenced it in the TV show when he headed to the “big city” of Mount Pilot.
